The Mediterranean Diet Plan – What Makes This Diet Different?



The Mediterranean diet plan is a nutritional diet pattern inspired by cuisine that has been traditionally consumed as part of the culture of the coastal regions of southern Italy and parts of Greece. It was introduced to the world in the 1945, and by the mid 1990s took effect in its present- day form through books and recipes. Various diet and health studies have associated it with prolonged life span, lower rates of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and dementia, as well as helping to prevent Type-2 diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. That is quite an impressive list. But here we will examine whether the Mediterranean diet plan also promotes fat loss.

What makes the Mediterranean diet plan different from most plans is that it is not designed specifically for weight loss, but as a habitual style of eating; almost as a dietary way of life. The following are some of its main characteristics:

• Olive oil as the predominant fat, as it is more monounsaturated fat acids than any other naturally produced oil, and its high content of antioxidative substances.

• Limiting the consumption of red meat, and putting a greater emphasis on fish (consumed at least twice per week) and poultry.

• When flavoring foods (and they are flavorful), using herbs and spices instead of salt.

• Drinking red wine in moderation during meals. It is believed that grape juice will yield the same benefits for people who do not consume alcohol.

• Limiting dairy consumption to skim milk, fat-free yogurt and low-fat cheese.

That is just a brief outline of the Mediterranean diet. As mentioned, it is not designed specifically for quick weight loss, but because of the foods it promotes (and conversely foods that you should shun), if consumed in moderation and with some exercise, it will naturally help you to lose excess weight. But it should not be considered a quick-fix, and if you need to lose ten pounds for by your wedding next week, being on the Mediterranean diet for a healthy a week undoubtedly will not do that. This is a long-term method to living a healthy lifestyle, where you are able to eat ample amounts of delicious foods with multiple ways in which they can be prepared. We have found that most diets, if rigorously followed over a period of time, will yield weight loss results. But the issue becomes when dieters are tempted by foods that are not within their diet regimen, they can no longer maintain that Spartan lifestyle and they give in to temptation, and the problem is blamed on the lack of willpower. The Mediterranean diet takes away the need for willpower, and that is what makes it different from most diets.

Atkins Diet – Everything You Need to Know

There is a diet that carnivores will love. None other than the Atkins diet, which recommends the consumption of meat and fat and limited carbohydrates. It is the diet of the American physician Robert Atkins and is considered quite effective, but of course this does not mean that it doesn’t have its drawbacks.

According to Robert Atkins, who is the creator of the diet, carbohydrates and sugar are responsible for weight gain. But when the body does not find carbohydrates “fuel” is directed to the combustion of the fat stored in our body.

For this reason the Atkins diet suggests that the proteins covering 27% of total energy intake (normal is 15%), fat 68% (normal is 30%) and carbohydrate 5% (normal is 50-55%).

What is allowed in the Atkins diet

Foods rich in protein: meat, fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, vegetables and nuts.
Fats from: meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, oil, nuts and certain vegetables such as avocados.

What carbohydrates are limited in the Atkins diet

Carbohydrates: bread, pasta, cereals, beans, sugar, fruits and
vegetables.

The daily carbohydrate intake should not exceed 20 grams per day, corresponding to a large slice of bread.

How the diet works

The idea of the Atkins diet is to control carbohydrates which leads to rapid weight loss due to consumption of fewer calories, which in turn is due to the reduced appetite for food. In short if you follow the diet of Atkins, you’ll burn more calories and get less hungry.

The food we eat is converted into glucose and glucose into energy. When you reduce the carbohydrates in our diet, the liver converts fat (ketones) into glucose, causing what is called “ketosis.” This leads to reduce appetite and burn body fat as fuel.

As well as the increased intake of protein and fat it slows the digestive process, making it easier to eat less.

Pros and cons

“Many professionals in healthcare, including myself, have either rejected the low-carbohydrate diets, or are very wary of them. But it seems to be an effective option for those who are dieting, said Christopher Gardner, head of the study and assistant professor of Preventive Medicine Research Center at Stanford in California.

On the other hand, scientists from the School of Medicine, Mount Sinai in New York found that the protein diets, Atkins-type, cause long term brain damage that could lead to the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

A conclusion reached by experts after testing that was done on mice.

Specifically found that mice who ate frequent meals similar to those recommended by the Atkins diet, the hippocampus region of the brain associated with memory were less developed compared with those fed normally.

Previous research published in the journal Journal of the American Dietetic Association and considered three popular diets: Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet and diet Ornis first link-up with elevated cholesterol levels.

Specifically, the study argues that those who followed the Atkins diet after one month showed an increase in the levels of “bad” cholesterol. In contrast, those engaged in the other two diets (South Beach Diet and Ornish diet plan) saw a decrease of 12% and 17% respectively.

Mediterranean Diet



The Mediterranean Diet is not really a diet it is more about different eating habits. It traditionally comes from the people in the Mediterranean whom are living longer and with fewer diseases then anywhere else in the world. The main focus is on many plant based food like fruits and vegetables and also on whole grains and beans, fish and shellfish, olive oil or canola oil, and red wine.

The benefits of this way of eating is that it helps to reduce heart disease by lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, prevents many cancers, helps in controlling diabetes, and is important in maintaining weight just to name a few. In addition, it is important to reduce stress and to exercise as this is also a big part of the lives of the people in the Mediterranean (they virtually walk everywhere).

The majority of the food eaten should be whole grains and beans/legumes, around 9 servings of fruits and vegetables, olive or canola oil, nuts/seeds, herbs and spices, red wine (in moderation), and fish and shellfish everyday. Try to eat a variety of foods within these categories and go for a wide range of colors.

The things that are typically not in the plan are very little or no red meats and processed foods. It is also very limited in the amount of dairy, sweets, saturated fats, and trans fats that are eaten. As far as diets and/or eating plans go this one appears to be realistic and doable.

When I am asked by a client how to lose weight fast I always tell them it is not enough to just change their diet and exercise, they must also get their mind set for success. 1. Get your body primed for weight loss with a simple shift in your diet. The challenge for many people who want to lose weight is that their bodies have become resistant to weight loss. Atkins Diet Negative Effects – My Atkins Diet Experience

The Atkins diet is basically a low carbohydrate diet which involves eating high protein and high fat foods while avoiding anything even slightly carb like. I have also heard the rumor that Dr Atkin himself died from a heart attack when his diet was actually created to prevent heart attacks, obesity and diabetes.

My Atkins diet negative experiences

Sure cutting out carbohydrates completely may work for some people but for me I felt sluggish and could barely bring myself to fall out of bed. Going on a diet doesn’t have to be this strict and going no carbohydrates at all is ridiculous the best option and what worked for me was to time my carbohydrates or stick to carbohydrates with a low glycemic index to avoid it affecting my blood sugar (which is the cause for diabetes, hypertension and other medical conditions)

Its very simple on any given day I will think about what my day will involve and then I will plan the amount of carbohydrates I eat depending on my activity level. So if I am stuck behind a desk all day I will consume plenty of low GI carbohydrates like oats and brown rice and mainly during the earlier part of the day to avoid storing it as fat.

When I have a day off and have time to put in a bit of exercise I might give myself a quick carbohydrate boost so I can get the most out of my workout and as long as I work hard enough I wont be storing any of those carbohydrates as fat, which is also a good motivator to keep you going when you know if you don’t do enough those carbs could be sticking around longer than you want.

Atkins Diet Side effects on the Body

Not only does it leave you tired and lacking energy the Atkins diet negative effects are mainly evident by the damage caused by depriving yourself of carbohydrates which can put pressure on your organs to work overtime and gives your body no option but to run your body on nothing but protein and fat which are both inferior energy sources. Human’s were designed to eat carbs just not processed carbohydrates.

You also see those Atkins products in your supermarkets and they seem to have a huge range of products I have tried many but no longer stick to an all Atkins diet but every now and then I will buy an Atkins advantage indulge sugar free chocolate bar to “indulge” because they are still a great snack no matter what diet your on at the time.

The Facts about Commercial Dog Food

Commercial dog food is a result of a need for convenient and easy pet food, and not the result of an improved dietary menu being discovered. As the commercial dog food industry progresses, the ingredients used in kibble are departing further and further from the profile of food that a canine would have eaten in its evolutionary environment. Because the veterinarians we trust are advocating for the feeding of a dry, grain filled kibble, the general public have come to regard kibble as the pinnacle of canine nutrition. Not only is the information wrong that the consumer receives about the product they are buying, but they are also not informed about the process used to create kibble. Almost all commercial kibble is created through a process called extrusion. Conflict of Interest?

The company that owns Hill’s science diet (colgate-palmolive) spends hundreds of thousands of dollars per year funding university research and nutrition programs at each of the twenty-seven veterinary colleges in the US. Therefore, veterinarians are receiving biased education on the nutritional requirements for cats and dogs. Once veterinarians are practicing, they receive up to 40% of the profit for the sale of Hill’s Science Diet pet food. Although some of these veterinarians have not been educated about the truths of commercial dog food, there is still a conflict of interest existing between Hill’s Pet food, the veterinary practitioner, and the consumer. The two main ingredients in the most popular brand of science diet, ironically name “real chicken” are Brewer’s Rice and ground wheat. Brewers rice is a by-product of the alcohol industry, while wheat is indigestible to the canine digestive tract. By advocating food that is detrimental to the health of the animals they are treating, Veterinarians are breaking their most basic oath, to use their knowledge and skills for the protection of animal health.

Alternatives You Can Choose

A wide range of alternatives to commercial dog food are available. Grain free kibble exists that has still undergone the extrusion process, or a non-extruded kibble is available that has been baked at lower temperatures. Dehydrated food has been developed that contains little or no grains, and requires the addition of water to rehydrate the meat that has been dehydrated and powdered at low temperatures. The raw canine diet that is becoming increasingly popular, and that most resembles the diet a canine would eat in its evolutionary environment is the Prey Model Diet.
